Dallas Voice Mail - Local Access Transport Areas (LATA)

Your Local Access Transport Area is the area surrounding your home or business for approximately 50-100 or so miles. The size and shape of LATAs across the country vary tremendously. See the information pages in front of your telephone book for information about your LATA.

Your local home or business LATA is where your local phone company will provide "short" long distance service. When you dial 1 + for long distance calls within your home or business LATA, your local phone company may charge you 30+ cents per a minute.

When you dial 1+ for calls outside your home LATA, then your long distance carrier picks up the call.

To have your distance carrier pick up your "short" long distance calls, then you must make sure that your local telephone company has the proper PIC code for "intraLATA" calls.

Another option is for you to dial the proper access code before dialing 1+ and the number. For example, someone in Fort Worth calling Dallas Voice Mail would enter, "10555-1-972-378-1496." The "10555" is the access code for our main long distance provider.

If you are a business with a PBX, one option you have is to program the Least Call Routing table to insert "10555" before every long distance call in the appropiate area codes.

If you do not have a PBX, then program one speed-dial button on your phone for use with the appropriate area codes. For example, at Dallas Voice Mail we punch a speed-dial button before every long distance call in the 214, 817, 903, and 972 area codes.
